Research ability †

In the Department of Intelligent Systems Engineering, research is conducted in a wide field from computer graphics software technology to hardware technology like robotics and nanotechnology. The results are highly appreciated both inside and outside Japan. Also, joint research with private enterprises are carried out enthusiastically. Graduation research †

In the fourth year, students are assigned to a laboratory to begin their graduation research. In the graduation research, students investigate important areas of advanced technology, and find a subject to pursue based on the knowledge that they acquired in the previous three years.

While receiving teachers' guidance, students examine a problem and find a solution through experimentation. Through this process, they learn the importance of contributing to society as engineers or as researchers.

Moreover, while working with teachers, seniors, and classmates, students experience the importance of teamwork and relationships in technology development. Organizing research results, preparing reports, and acquiring a good presentation ability are also important aims of graduation research.

Let’s research in graduate school †

Computer technology and mechanical technology are advancing rapidly. It is becoming more difficult to deal with leading edge theory or technology in the fourth year graduation research. Therefore, more students are going on to graduate school to gain greater knowledge and technology understanding. In the Department of Systems Engineering, the predecessor of Intelligent Systems Engineering, 60% of students of Course A, and 20% of students of Course B have gone on to graduate school.

In graduate school, apart from lectures, students spend most of their time in the laboratories they belong to. Under the direction of teachers, students do more advanced research than done in the first four years of university. Students organize their degree thesis and present the results of their research at national and international conferences. Students not only advance their own research, but also look after the fourth year students in the same laboratory, and take the lead in giving presentations at seminars and in discussions.

The days in graduate school are never uneventful. In two years of graduate school, many students achieve greater growth that way exceeds four years of university life. Moreover, we offer a doctoral course (the Department of Science and Engineering Doctoral Course ) for enthusiastic students who aim at higher research.
